Active and retired members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Officer Corps, US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, US Coast Guard, US Marine Corps, US Air Force, US Space Force, US Army and US Navy are entitled to at least a basic level of coverage from TRICARE. This is why we are proud to be a Tricare alcohol and drug rehab.
How TriCare Can Help you Recover
TRICARE Drug Rehab Coverage
In 2017, TRICARE insurance underwent a huge overhaul. It updated its policies regarding behavioral and mental health, which includes substance use disorders. Anyone who has a TRICARE Insurance policy is entitled to specialized opiate addiction treatment as well as help with other substance use disorders.
Members of military personnel face unique pressures that most civilians couldn’t begin to imagine. Some of the responsibilities these brave people shoulder lead to mental health issues such as PTSD. Unfortunately, these challenging experiences can drive individuals to substance abuse in an attempt to block out the pain and self-medicate.
TRICARE fully understands this and aims to provide people who are covered under its insurance plan with all the help and support they need to overcome addiction.
Options to get the help you need
TRICARE Health Plan Options
Exactly what you’re entitled to depends on your individual plan. There are too many to list, but they fall into eight categories:
- TRICARE Prime offers coverage in specific geographical locations that are considered highly desirable.
- TRICARE Prime Remote provides coverage in remote locations around the country, plus some overseas territories.
- TRICARE Standard and Extra require a monthly payment, but you don’t need to enroll or do anything special to get the services you need.
- TRICARE Standard Overseas provides full coverage for active duty military personnel who live overseas.
- TRICARE for Life is a Medicare option to give additional assistance to those who use Medicare Parts A and B.
- TRICARE Reserve Select is a premium plan for qualified reserve members and their families.
- TRICARE Retired Reserve is a premium plan that covers retired service members under 60 and their family members.
- TRICARE Young Adult provides cover for young adult children who aren’t entitled to other TRICARE plans.
In-Network and Out-Of-Network Insurance Providers
In general, you’ll only qualify for full coverage if you use one of TRICARE’s select treatment providers. In-network providers already have a pricing plan in place to make billing the treatment services easy. When it comes to out-of-pocket costs, most TRICARE members won’t be expected to pay much towards their care, but they usually pay something.
If you’re a member of any TRICARE plan except Prime or Standard and Extra, you can seek treatment at any out-of-network treatment facility. That said, people who choose a facility that’s out-of-network usually pay a significantly higher portion of the costs. You might also be expected to file an individual claim. To be precise, an out-of-network treatment provider can charge as much as 15% more.
In some cases, if you opt for an out-of-network rehab, you might need to pay all the costs yourself upfront and then wait for partial reimbursement from the insurance company once you’ve completed a course of treatment.
How TRICARE Covers Costs for Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Rehab
TRICARE Insurance is happy to pay some or all of the costs of residential inpatient treatment, provided some specific criteria are met. These conditions include:
- The individual must have a diagnosable substance use disorder.
- Withdrawal symptoms should be so severe that they require assistance from a physician and around-the-clock care.
- If the individual isn’t struggling to function in their everyday life, TRICARE might only offer to pay for outpatient rehab.
Provided you meet these requirements, TRICARE offers coverage for emergency and nonemergency visits to inpatient rehab programs. Emergency treatment describes a psychotic break, overdose or other emergency medical situation that arises because of substance abuse.
Non Emergency substance abuse treatment is when you make a decision to seek inpatient services for yourself. TRICARE must pre-authorize this decision before you begin the recovery journey at a rehab center. Inpatient coverage for TRICARE usually includes drug and alcohol detox, residential treatment and the costs of medication-assisted treatment if it’s deemed medically necessary.
