Getting Help for Addiction

Will My Policy Cover The Cost of Treatment?

If you’ve recently decided to seek treatment for addiction, you’ll be delighted to know that insurance covers certain aspects of rehab. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) obligates all marketplace insurance plans, Medicaid plans and private insurance policies to cover health benefits such as emergency services, vision care, lab tests, pediatric care and mental health conditions. Substance abuse disorders fall into the mental health category, and therefore some level of treatment must be covered by your insurance plan.

Precisely the type of insurance coverage you have will depend on your policy, but one stipulation is that insurance companies can’t disqualify you based on preexisting conditions. While they can’t put financial limitations on what is covered over any period, they can set a time limit for specific treatments. Extensive policies may include luxury elements of your care, but it’s best to check with your provider to find out exactly what is paid for by your plan.

Fill out the confidential form above and a member of our staff will verify your benefits for you. We accept most major insurance providers like Aetna, AnthemBeaconCignaComPsychFirst Choice HealthHealth Net, MultiPlanTricare, and United Healthcare.

How Insurance Can Help you Recover

Drug Rehab Services Covered by Insurance

Detox

You can undergo detox at an outpatient rehab center, but it’s often more effective when carried out in a safe residential environment where clinical staff are on hand. Most insurance companies cover detox to some extent when it’s essential for your recovery.

Outpatient Treatment

Attending an outpatient rehab program suits some clients better because it allows you to go home in the evenings. Your policy will usually include a certain number of days or sessions. Many people find that the additional structure and focus of residential rehab helps them through the chronic stages of addiction.

Inpatient Rehab

Depending on how severe your addiction is and which substances you’ve been taking, inpatient treatment may be a more practical environment for substance abuse treatment. Insurance should cover some aspects of your care minus any copays, but the number of days may be restricted.

Psychotherapy and Counseling

Most insurance plans provide some level of coverage for counseling and therapy. This means you could opt to choose the highest quality treatment and not have to pay for it in full.

Medication

If you require a prescription during detox or to help with associated symptoms, most policies will cover at least part of the payment.

What Doesn’t Insurance Cover?

Aspects of Treatment Not Considered a Medical Necessity

The most important thing for insurance companies is to make sure that they are paying for care that is a medical necessity. This means it must be a medical requirement — going without it would make recovery impossible. The level of need is what will usually be taken into account when deciding whether you need outpatient or inpatient care. If you’re suffering from physical dependence to alcoholopioids or benzodiazepines, withdrawal management will usually be considered medically necessary.

Any Treatment That Isn’t Empirically Validated

Most treatment centers take a holistic approach to treatment, meaning they provide complementary therapies that relax you and get you in the right frame of mind for therapy. While this part of the experience can help people get more out of treatment, leisure activities and holistic activities such as art and music may not be covered by your policy.

Are There Other Ways to Pay for Treatment?

If you’ve got your heart set on attending a luxurious rehab facility, there may be other ways to pay. Luxury rehab can take a lot of stress out of the entire process by ensuring clients enjoy the finest food, home comforts and experiential therapy alongside addiction treatment options. Your insurance will usually cover a portion of your stay at rehab, but if you’re looking for an executive or luxury treatment program, you may need to contribute your own funds or ask a loved one for help.

Payment Plan

Some drug and alcohol rehab clinics offer payment plans for people with favorable credit ratings. This way, you can pay in installments over a fixed time.

Credit

You can pay using a health care credit card or take out a personal loan to cover the extra costs of a treatment center.

Crowdfunding

This modern way of raising funds could be a great way to cover additional costs if you’re savvy with social media.
